On this page, I would like to share some pictures of my pilgrimage, and I’d like to introduce some easy, often used Japanese words.
I think these Japanese words will certainly be useful for your own pilgrimage.
So far I have made the pilgrimage three times by car and motorbike.
Now I am on my fourth pilgrimage.
I have never made the pilgrimage on foot.
One day, I would like to try it on foot.
Excuse me – I’m sorry – sumimasen - すみません
This time it is the 9th temple, Hōrinji, and the words can be used to mean both “excuse me” and “I’m sorry.”

Words of thanks at mealtime – いただきます – ごちそうさまでした
Today I would like to introduce Shōzanji Temple, the 12th temple and a word of thanks for the food.
In Japan, there are greetings before and after meals. We are taught as children to make this greeting with our hands together toward the meal, as we do before the temple.
Before the meal - itadakimasu – いただきます
After the meal - gochisōsamadeshita – ごちそうさまでした
